Fasting test

Use this plan only when your clinician, request form, or laboratory specifically says to fast. Many routine tests, including many lipid tests, do not require fasting.

Your request form and your laboratory's own instructions always override this general list. When they differ, follow the lab.

Keep drinking plain waterStaying hydrated makes the sample easier to take and does not affect fasting results.
Avoid alcohol the evening beforeAlcohol can raise triglycerides and some liver markers.
No tea, coffee, juice, sweets or chewing gum until after the sampleAnything with calories breaks the fast.
